EXPLORING THE POWER OF WORDS: WAR LITERATURE LECTURE AT KDU SOUTHERN CAMPUS
As part of the War Week commemorations, the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University – Southern Campus hosted a compelling lecture on “War Literature”, held at the campus auditorium.
The lecture was conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Sujith Chaminda Edirisinghe, a seasoned officer and acclaimed author known for his contributions to Sri Lankan war literature. Drawing from years of first-hand experience and exploration of key milestones in the Sri Lanka Army’s three-decade-long battle against LTTE terrorism, Lieutenant Colonel Sujith Edirisinghe guided participants through a deeply reflective and interactive session. His insights brought to light the untold truths, heroics and sacrifices embedded within the realities of war.
Among the works highlighted was his renowned publication, “Awasana Satana” (The Final Battle), through which he examined the emotional, psychological and societal dimensions of armed conflict as preserved in the written word.
The event was graced by the presence of Major General (Retd) LCR Jayasuriya RSP ndc psc, former Rector of KDUSC, who attended as the Chief Guest, along with Brigadier Enoj Herath RSP USP ndu psc, Rector of KDUSC, Dr. Sanath De Silva, Military Staff, Academic Staff, Officer Cadets and Day Scholars.
Throughout the session, attendees were reminded that war literature is not merely a historical record but also a medium for healing, remembrance and national identity. The stories shared during the lecture offered a human dimension to conflict—beyond tactics and timelines.
The session stood as a timely tribute to the resilience of those who endured conflict and it concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to the guest speaker as a gesture of appreciation and recognition of the knowledge imparted.
