Awareness Lecture on Dangerous Drugs Conducted at KDU Southern Campus
A timely awareness lecture on the classification of dangerous drugs, their harmful effects and the legal consequences associated with drug abuse was held at KDU Southern Campus on 04th July 2025 under the guidance of the Rector, Brigadier Enoj Herath RSP USP ndu psc.
The session, conducted by Sub Inspector Suraweera of Sooriyawewa Police Station, aimed to educate both Officer Cadets and Day Scholars on the growing threat of drug use among today’s youth. With drug-related issues on the rise, especially among young adults, the programme served as an essential platform to enlighten students about the dangers of addiction, its impact on physical and mental health and the severe legal penalties linked to drug possession and trafficking.
The lecture was conducted in two separate sessions, covering Officer Cadets and Day Scholars of Intakes 41 and 42, with a participation of nearly 270 students. Sub Inspector Suraweera, drawing from his extensive experience handling drug-related investigations, provided insight into different categories of narcotics, including synthetic drugs that are increasingly targeting the younger generation.
The session emphasised how drug abuse not only undermines academic performance but also leads to long-term health issues, social complications and criminal involvement. Students were also briefed on the existing laws and penalties concerning drug possession and trafficking in Sri Lanka, reinforcing the message of accountability and the importance of leading a drug-free life.
The initiative reflects KDU Southern Campus’s continued commitment to fostering discipline, awareness and responsible citizenship among its student body, ensuring they are equipped to make informed decisions and resist the growing temptations and threats posed by drugs in society.
